# Gogol — The Man Who Was Thursday character guide

> Gogol in The Man Who Was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Brother Gogol, the hairy Gogol

**First appearance:** 0005-iv-the-tale-of-a-detective

## Snapshot

A hulking sham anarchist whose forest of foreign hair conceals a cockney accent, a red-haired detective, and a talent for impersonation that fools even his fellow conspirators.

## Who they are

Gogol sits among the seven masked anarchists as the hairy, foreign-looking Pole, but when Sunday unmasks him his thin red hair and pert London voice betray the detective beneath. He takes his exposure with nonchalance, even pride in his own accent-work, and walks out with a stumble that betrays his assumed ease. His unmasking is the first crack in the Council's theatre, teaching Syme that everyone in this game may be playing a part.
