# Dr. Renard — The Man Who Was Thursday character guide

> Dr. Renard in The Man Who Was Thursday by G. K. Chesterton.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Renard, Doctor Renard

**First appearance:** 0012-xi-the-criminals-chase-the-police

## Snapshot

A convivial French detective who joins the pursuit of Sunday, treating the chase as an excuse for drinks, songs, and cheerful companionship among men who may all be spies.

## Who they are

Dr. Renard travels with the reunited detectives by boat and train, keeping close to his companions and pressing for shared cabs and shared drinks. His optimism and conviviality soften the paranoia of the pursuit, and it is he who drags the exposed Gogol back into the fold with the cry that they are all spies. He embodies the story's strange fellowship of pursuers who cannot tell friend from enemy.
