# Mr. Crawley — The Man Who Knew character guide

> Mr. Crawley in The Man Who Knew by Edgar Wallace.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Crawley, Trooper Henry Crawley, Sergeant Crawley

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-man-in-the-laboratory

## Snapshot

A trooper turned keeper of terrible secrets, Crawley took in a stricken woman and her child and passed the girl off as his own daughter.

## Who they are

Crawley moves through the margins of the case as a man with something to hide, having conveyed Jasper Cole's dying mother to the workhouse infirmary and raised Marguerite as his own child without ever revealing her true parentage. His deception sits at the heart of the novel's central mystery: a father searching for a lost daughter while the girl lives unrecognized under his nose. Crawley's quiet fraud shapes the fates of nearly everyone in the book, making him far more consequential than his modest appearances suggest.
