The bond between the narrator and McKnight is central, tested by the protagonist's secret romance and the pressures of the crime, yet ultimately enduring through shared humor and mutual support.
Crime, Guilt, and Moral Ambiguity
The murder and subsequent theft of forged notes explore themes of guilt, innocence, and the moral compromises of characters like Sullivan, who admits to larceny but denies murder.

Multiple characters, including Mrs. Conway and Sullivan, operate with hidden motives, using lies, forged notes, and secret meetings to manipulate events and protect themselves.
