What happens

McKnight and the narrator travel to M— to investigate the wreck and the whereabouts of Sullivan. They interview the station agent, who recalls a man with a limp and a satchel who collapsed upon hearing of the wreck. They then visit the Carter farmhouse, where they unexpectedly find Hotchkiss, who has been investigating the same clues. Hotchkiss reveals pieces of a torn telegram found in the pajamas, which the narrator reconstructs as 'Man with papers (in) lower ten, car seven. Get (them).' The chapter ends with Hotchkiss puzzling over a bit of chain, causing the narrator anxiety about implicating Alison West.
