# Thomas Sylvester Hobhouse — The Man from the Clouds character guide > Thomas Sylvester Hobhouse in The Man from the Clouds by J. Storer Clouston. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Thomas, Mr. Hobhouse, Mr. Thomas Sylvester Hobhouse **First appearance:** 0000-i-in-the-clouds ## Snapshot A young Englishman who invents a false identity to investigate a suspicious Scottish island, only to find his own disguise fraying at the edges. ## Who they are Hobhouse arrives on Ransay posing as a harmless, shy guest, carefully suppressing every trace of the actor Roger Merton beneath a beard and a studied dullness. His cover demands constant improvisation — he feigns interest in subjects he crammed a week earlier and avoids Jean Rendall's gaze lest recognition flicker. The tension between his genuine curiosity about the Rendalls and his need to remain invisible drives the early arc, as each polite tea party becomes a quiet test of nerve. ## Relationships ### [Dr. Rendall](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/characters/dr_rendall) _professional_ Dr. Rendall and Hobhouse are deeply entangled in a professional relationship, likely involving scientific or academic collaboration with underlying tension. ### [Jean Rendall](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/characters/jean_rendall) _romantic_ Jean and Hobhouse share a romantic connection, with Hobhouse showing strong interest and Jean being both drawn and cautious. ### [Roger Merton](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/characters/roger_merton) _rivalry_ Roger and Hobhouse are rivals, both vying for the same goal and distrusting each other deeply. ### [Dr. ### [Dr. Rendall](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/characters/dr_rendall) _professional_ Dr. Rendall and Hobhouse are deeply entangled in a professional relationship, likely involving scientific or academic collaboration with underlying tension. ## In the story ### [II: The Man on the Shore](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/chapters/ii-the-man-on-the-shore) The narrator lands on the island, hides his parachute, and successfully deceives the oilskinned stranger into believing he is a fellow spy. ### [Alone Again](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_man_from_the_clouds_se/chapters/iii-alone-again) The protagonist, alone and hungry, devises a plan to appear as a 'fellow Hun' to deceive the stranger.
