## Who they are

Jack Whiteclett is the kind of old friend who turns up two hundred miles out of his way and pretends it's nothing, then quietly admits the island has been worrying him. He arrives with congratulations, a hint of a decoration, and a warning: submarines have been sighted, signals seen on shore, and his earlier doubts about Roger's suspicions are withdrawn. His visit reopens the case and pulls the narrator back toward Ransay just when rest seemed possible.
