Chapter 1
I: In the Clouds
The chapter opens with Rutherford and the narrator (Merton) in a balloon that breaks free from its cable, sending them adrift over the North Sea. They discuss their chances of landing in enemy territory and plan to escape if they land. Rutherford, convinced they are over land, jumps with a parachute and disappears into the mist, never to be seen again. The narrator, after a period of loneliness and preparation, also jumps and lands safely in a field of clover.
Chapter 2
II: The Man on the Shore
After landing in a misty field, the narrator hides his parachute and follows the sound of the sea to the coast. He encounters a man in an oilskin and sou'wester who warns him not to speak German, revealing they are on an island. The narrator convinces the stranger he is a fellow spy, and the man promises to find him a safe place, instructing him to wait. After the stranger leaves, the narrator hears a whistle but finds no one, and is left alone in the growing darkness.
Chapter 3
Alone Again
After the mysterious stranger vanishes, the protagonist is left alone on the island, grappling with suspicion and uncertainty. He deduces that the stranger's odd behavior—concealing his face, asking about sheep, and whistling—indicates he is suspected of being an enemy. The protagonist decides to adopt a persona of a 'fellow Hun' to mislead the stranger and his confederates, overdoing patriotic English behavior and eating gluttonously. Exhausted and hungry, he stumbles upon a farm, where he is fed and sheltered for the night, collapsing into sleep in a barn. The next day, he reflects on the stranger's motives and the possibility that the island is not what it seems.
Chapter 4
The Suspicious Stranger
The protagonist wakes up in a barn on the island of Ransay, having narrowly escaped drowning the previous night. He notices his oilskin has been unbuttoned, suggesting someone may have searched him during the night. He devises a plan to spread word of a suspicious stranger to draw out the spy he encountered on the shore. He meets the Scollay family, who are wary of him, and learns that the island belongs to Mr. Rendall. He decides to visit Mr. Rendall, hoping to find an ally in his spy hunt.
Chapter 5
V: The Doctor's House
Thomas, posing as Mr. Roger Merton, calls on Dr. Rendall. He is met by Mr. O'Brien and the doctor, both of whom seem suspicious. Thomas probes them with questions about sheep and the island's inhabitants, but learns little. He observes that the doctor's study blind had been pulled down earlier, suggesting something was being hidden. O'Brien reveals there are only four 'civilised' houses on the island, and that Dr. Rendall is not the laird, but his cousin Philip Rendall is. Thomas leaves with mixed emotions, then reflects on the island's small size, realizing a spy could not hide there. He tries to recall the stranger's face but finds his memory of it is indistinct.
