The Maid of Sker · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure The Maid of Sker by R. D. Blackmore — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Identity
The book explores the rigid class distinctions of 18th-century British society, as seen through the orphaned child Bardie's uncertain origins, the narrator Davy Llewellyn's navigation between common folk and gentry, and characters' preoccupations with lineage, inheritance, and…
Truth and Narrative Reliability
The narrator Davy Llewellyn frequently admits to embellishing facts, manipulating perceptions, and prioritizing entertaining lies over inconvenient truths, making the reliability of the entire story a central theme and inviting readers to question what is real versus imagined.
Family and Orphanhood
Bardie's status as a shipwrecked orphan, her longing for her lost parents, and the various surrogate families that form around her highlight themes of loss, belonging, and the search for familial connection in a harsh world.
Maritime Life and Adventure
The sea dominates the setting and plot, with fishing, shipwrecks, naval battles, and the narrator's own seafaring career providing a backdrop of danger, freedom, and lawlessness that contrasts with inland society.
Gender and Power
Women in the book navigate limited roles as wives, servants, or objects of desire, yet characters like Moxy, Lady Bluett, and even young Bardie exercise subtle influence, while the narrator's manipulative interactions with women reveal gendered power dynamics.
Morality and Hypocrisy
The book examines moral ambiguity through characters like Parson Chowne (a violent clergyman) and Davy himself, who justifies theft and deception while claiming virtue, exposing the gap between professed ethics and actual behavior.
Superstition and Religion
Religious references mix with folk superstition, as characters invoke scripture, Welsh traditions, and supernatural beliefs (e.g., witchcraft, omens) to explain events, reflecting a world where faith and folklore coexist uneasily.
Class Mobility and Ambition
Davy's constant striving for status, money, and recognition, along with Bardie's potential rise from castaway to heiress, illustrate the possibilities and limits of social climbing in a stratified society.
