## Snapshot

A grave, spectacled old gentleman who guards a sailor's pay and a castaway child's future with the same sober conscience.

## Who they are

Master Berkrolles is a man of too much mind for joking, trusted enough to hold Davy Llewellyn's saved wages and to speak plainly about what the child Bunny will need if her protector is lost at sea. He answers her piercing question about charity with a kindness that reconciles her to her pride, even as she insists she would rather have a home. His steady moral presence gives the story its conscience and gives Bardie her first taste of being treated as an equal.
