## Snapshot

A poor woman known as Polly, thrice disappointed in love, who helps raise the shipwrecked child Bardie with rough tenderness.

## Who they are

Marly Mary, called Polly by the household, is one of the women who tends Bardie in the lonely house at Sker, and she clings to the child with a fierce, unthanked devotion. Thrice disappointed and careful never to have a husband, she is the only woman of superior mind Davy claims to have met, and her plain truths cut through the talk around her. Her care for Bardie, and Bardie's for her, gives the novel its warmest thread of makeshift family.
