# Colonel Lougher — The Maid of Sker character guide

> Colonel Lougher in The Maid of Sker by R. D. Blackmore.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Colonel, mild Colonel Lougher, the good Colonel Lougher, Lougher

**First appearance:** 0001-the-maid-of-sker

## Snapshot

A just, upright old soldier who admits his mistakes and is won over by a castaway child's unexpected elegance and taste for good wine.

## Who they are

Colonel Lougher is the mild, deliberate gentleman whose instinct is to see to the bottom of things before rushing in, unlike his quicker sister Lady Bluett. He initially takes Bardie for a Kenfig nobody, but her pretty manners and fluent toast to his birthday force him to confess his error and delight in her. His fairness and standing make him a natural protector for the child and a quiet counterweight to the rougher powers around Sker.
