During the event, George catches a disquieting glimpse of his mother as a woman separate from her maternal role. He meets Lucy Morgan, a dark-eyed beauty from out of town, and escorts her through the festivities, feeling immensely proud of his family's status and his own importance.

At the Amberson ball, George Amberson Minafer dances with Lucy Morgan and becomes possessive of her, while also observing his Aunt Fanny dancing with a stranger. George dismisses his father and uncle, and reveals his ambition to be a yachtsman, showing his disdain for business and professional life.
