Concepts
Ideas that structure The Magician by W. Somerset Maugham — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Occult and Supernatural
The narrative is steeped in occult practices, magic, and supernatural phenomena, from snake charming and alchemy to necromancy and demonic influence, challenging the boundaries of rational science.
Love and Sacrifice
Arthur's deep, devoted love for Margaret drives him to extreme lengths, including risking his life and sanity, while Susie's unrequited love leads her to assist in dangerous rituals for his peace.
Good vs. Evil
The conflict between Arthur's honest, reliable nature and Oliver Haddo's malevolent, manipulative character embodies a classic struggle of good against evil, with Haddo representing corruption and dark ambition.
Obsession and Control
Haddo's obsessive pursuit of Margaret and his desire to control her through hypnotism and magical experiments highlight themes of domination, while Arthur's obsessive fear for Margaret's safety drives the plot.
Art and Beauty
The book frequently explores aesthetic appreciation, the power of art to evoke emotion, and the relationship between beauty and corruption, as seen in Margaret's artistic pursuits and Haddo's perverse fascination with the grotesque.
Madness and Reality
Characters grapple with blurred lines between sanity and insanity, especially through Margaret's psychological torment, Arthur's neurotic breakdown, and the surreal events that defy logical explanation.
Isolation and Entrapment
Margaret is physically and emotionally isolated at Skene, trapped in a marriage with a madman, while the characters' psychological isolation amplifies their vulnerability to supernatural forces.
Science vs. Mysticism
Arthur's practical, scientific worldview clashes with Dr. Porhoët's open-minded study of the occult and Haddo's esoteric knowledge, raising questions about the limits of reason and the validity of ancient wisdom.
