# Philip Haldane — The Magic City character guide > Philip Haldane in The Magic City by E. Nesbit. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Philip, Pip, Master Philip, Mr. Philip, Master Pip, dear Philip **First appearance:** 0001-the-magic-city ## Snapshot A ten-year-old boy whose cozy world with his half-sister Helen shatters when a tall, tweedy stranger arrives, driving him to build a city of books and toys that comes alive. ## Who they are Philip has known only Helen's invented games and lessons, so when she whispers with a suitor at the garden gate, his jealousy curdles into a loneliness he can't name. He pours that ache into constructing a miniature city from blocks, books, and Noah's Ark animals—and the city answers back, pulling him into its streets. His wounded possessiveness and stubborn courage make him both the trespasser the city's astrologers foretold and the only boy who can save it. ## Relationships ### [Lucy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/lucy) _friendship_ Lucy and Philip are close companions and allies, sharing adventures and mutual support in the magical city. ### [Helen](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/helen) _family_ Helen is Philip's sister, and they share a caring sibling bond with protective undertones. ### [The Captain](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/the_captain) _professional_ Philip interacts with The Captain as a leader or authority figure within the magical city's hierarchy. ### [Old Perrin](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/old_perrin) _professional_ Old Perrin serves as a mentor or wise figure to Philip, offering guidance in the magical realm. ### [Sir Philip](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/sir_philip) _psychological_ Philip and Sir Philip share a complex, possibly doppelgänger or identity-related dynamic, with tension or fascination. ### [Max](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/max) _friendship_ Max and Philip are allies and friends, often cooperating in their adventures. ### [Julius Caesar](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/julius_caesar) _social_ Julius Caesar and Philip interact as historical figure and adventurer, with a mix of respect and formality. ### [Lucy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/lucy) _friendship_ Lucy and Philip are close companions and allies, sharing adventures and mutual support in the magical city. ### [Lucy](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/lucy) _friendship_ Lucy and Philip are close companions and allies, sharing adventures and mutual support in the magical city. ### [Helen](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/characters/helen) _family_ Helen is Philip's sister, and they share a caring sibling bond with protective undertones. ## In the story ### [The Magic City](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/the-magic-city) The protagonist who builds the magic city and enters it. ### [I: The Beginning](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/i-the-beginning) A ten-year-old boy living with his half-sister Helen; feels displaced and lonely after her marriage. ### [Deliverer or Destroyer](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/ii-deliverer-or-destroyer) Captured and imprisoned, initially hostile to Lucy but later agrees to a truce; learns the city is his own creation. ### [Lost](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/iii-lost) Wakes up late, feels guilty about Lucy's disappearance, and learns from Mr. Noah that the magic city is real in another world. ### [IV: The Dragon-Slayer](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/iv-the-dragon-slayer) Accepts the role of Deliverer, devises a plan to slay the dragon using its clockwork key, and successfully defeats it. ### [On the Carpet](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/v-on-the-carpet) Reluctantly accepts Lucy's help, completes the second deed, and is knighted as Sir Philip. ### [VI: The Lions in the Desert](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_magic_city_se/chapters/vi-the-lions-in-the-desert) Philip rides the camel, helps build the fire, and is bitten awake by the parrot to face the lions.
