Concepts
Ideas that structure The Madman by Khalil Gibran — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Masks and Authenticity
The book explores the tension between the social masks people wear and the authentic self beneath, as seen in the prologue where the madman's masks are stolen, revealing his true face to the sun, and in 'My Friend' where the narrator admits to wearing a 'care-woven garment' of…
Madness and Wisdom
Madness is portrayed as a form of higher insight or liberation from societal norms, as the madman gains freedom and love for the sun after losing his masks, and in 'The Wise King' where the entire city becomes 'mad' except the king, who then drinks the water to join them.
Solitude and Aloneness
The value and necessity of solitude is a recurring theme, with the madman finding 'freedom of loneliness' and insisting on being alone in his thoughts, feelings, and experiences, as in 'My Friend' where he says 'I would be at sea alone' and 'I would be in Hell alone.'
The Multiplicity of Self
The self is depicted as composed of multiple, often conflicting selves, as in 'The Seven Selves' where seven distinct selves (painful, joyous, love-ridden, hateful, thinking, working, and do-nothing) converse and rebel within the madman.
Illusion and Reality
The book questions the nature of reality versus perception, as in 'The Eye' where the eye sees a mountain that the ear, hand, and nose cannot perceive, and in 'Faces' where the narrator looks through the fabric of his own eye to see the reality beneath appearances.
Defeat and Transformation
Defeat is reimagined as a source of strength and self-knowledge, as in the poem 'Defeat' where it is called 'my deathless courage' and 'my shining sword and shield,' and in 'When My Sorrow Was Born' where sorrow becomes a noble companion that eventually dies, leading to isolat…
Critique of Society and Religion
The book critiques rigid social and religious structures, as in 'The Perfect World' where a 'perfect' society is described as stifling and lifeless, and in 'The Blessed City' where inhabitants mutilate themselves to follow scripture literally, revealing the absurdity of blind…
The Divine and Human Relationship
The evolving relationship between humanity and God is explored in the 'God' passage, where the narrator's understanding shifts from slave to son to co-creator, culminating in God whispering 'words of sweetness' and enfolding him.
