> The Cat'ual in The Lusiads by Luís de Camões.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Cat'ual, The Cat'ual Gama

**First appearance:** 0008-canto-iv

## Snapshot

The Moorish governor of Calicut, whose reception of the Portuguese will test whether words of peace can survive suspicion.

## Who they are

The Cat'ual rules the Indian port where Gama's fleet finally arrives, making him the first powerful foreigner the Portuguese must win or outwit. His dealings with the strangers unfold against a backdrop of local counsel and hidden agendas, where hospitality and hostility sit close together. He matters because the voyage's success depends less on storms than on whether this governor chooses to believe them.
