# Monsaydé — The Lusiads character guide

> Monsaydé in The Lusiads by Luís de Camões.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Moor, the caitiff Moor, Moor Monsaydé

**First appearance:** 0008-canto-iv

## Snapshot

A Moorish host in a far country, whose small kindnesses and local knowledge open the Malabar world to the Portuguese.

## Who they are

He is the stranger who receives the Portuguese as though their friendship were of olden date, feeding them, guiding them back to the fleet, and interpreting for them at the Calecut court. His tension is one of divided loyalties: a Moor among Hindus, a neighborly soul in a land of wary kings, he speaks of God bringing the fleet for some special service. He matters because his hospitality and translations are the doorway through which the poem's middle cantos enter India's politics and peril.
