# How does The Luck of Barry Lyndon develop the theme of Fate and Luck?

> The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray

## Answer

The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray develops Fate and Luck across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The title 'Luck of Barry Lyndon' underscores the role of chance in Barry's rise and fall, as he attributes his successes to fortune but ultimately faces ruin when his luck runs out.

Barry attributes his life's trajectory to luck, both good and bad, framing his narrative as a series of fortunate and unfortunate events.

Barry reflects on how small circumstances have shaped his life, and his initial luck in Dublin turns as his money runs out and his debts catch up with him.

Barry's fortunes shift with Fagan's arrival and death, and his reflections on the randomness of war and life.
