# How does The Luck of Barry Lyndon develop the theme of Deception and Self-Delusion?

> The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray

## Answer

The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray develops Deception and Self-Delusion across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Barry constantly lies about his pedigree, exploits others through schemes like rigged card games, and justifies his immoral actions, revealing a deep self-deception that blinds him to his own villainy.

The chapter discusses the real-life models for Barry Lyndon, highlighting how the novel explores the self-justifying narratives of an adventurer.

Mrs. Barry's pretensions to gentility and her idealized memory of her husband contrast sharply with the family's actual poverty and scandal.

Barry deludes himself about Nora's affection, ignoring Fagan's advice that she is a flirt and does not care for him.
