## Who they are

These Indians inhabit the remote village where the exhausted, flaxen-haired Maple White is taken in as a complete stranger, and they figure in his sketchbook as subjects of careful study. They are neither purely hostile nor welcoming, a guarded presence whose knowledge of the land the explorers must navigate. Their world provides the first tangible evidence, in White's drawings of long-snouted saurians, that the blank spaces on the map still hide something worth the journey.
