## Who they are

Gomez is one of the local hands hired for the Amazon journey, praised as a willing worker but dogged by the vice of curiosity common to such men. Caught lurking near the expedition's planning hut, he whips out a knife on the faithful Zambo and is disarmed only by sheer strength, ending in forced handshakes and reprimands. His smoldering resentment and the racial hatred Zambo bears him plant the earliest seeds of betrayal within the party's fragile trust.
