The Lost World

Inspired by her ideal of a 'man who could act' and 'look Death in the face,' Malone resolves to seek a worthy quest that very night, setting the stage for his extraordinary journey.

II: Try Your Luck with Professor Challenger
Malone seeks a dangerous assignment from his editor McArdle, who suggests he investigate the controversial Professor Challenger. Malone researches Challenger's background, including his violent reputation and his scientific disputes, then crafts a deceptive letter requesting an interview.
Chapter 5
He Is a Perfectly Impossible Person
Malone receives a brusque and condescending letter from Professor Challenger, granting him an interview. Upon arriving at Challenger's home, Malone is warned by Mrs. Challenger that her husband is a 'perfectly impossible person' and is dangerous when discussing South America. During the interview, Challenger quickly sees through Malone's disguise as a scientific inquirer and exposes him as a journalist. A physical altercation ensues, ending with both men tumbling out of the house and being separated by a policeman.
