Concepts
Ideas that structure The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Appearance vs. Reality
The Buntings' respectable, comfortable home and their own 'pleasant cosy picture of married life' mask their desperate poverty and the lodger's murderous secret, illustrating how outward respectability can conceal inner decay and danger.
Poverty and Social Insecurity
The Buntings teeter on the edge of destitution, having sold possessions and gone hungry, and their desperate need for money drives them to accept the lodger despite growing suspicions, showing how economic vulnerability can compromise moral judgment.
Class and Respectability
The Buntings, as former servants, cling to middle-class markers like good furniture and cleanliness, while the lodger is identified as a 'gentleman' by his manner, yet class distinctions blur as both the respectable and the criminal inhabit the same domestic space.
Complicity and Moral Ambiguity
Mrs. Bunting suspects the lodger is The Avenger but chooses to protect him out of financial need and a strange attachment, refusing to betray him to the police, highlighting the conflict between self-preservation, loyalty, and civic duty.
Fear and Suspicion
The narrative is saturated with the Buntings' growing dread and paranoia as they watch the lodger's nocturnal movements, find bloodstains, and listen to news of the murders, creating a tense atmosphere where domestic life becomes a site of horror.
Isolation and Urban Anonymity
The Buntings are isolated from former friends and neighbours, and the lodger is a solitary figure who 'creeps out' at night, reflecting how the vast, foggy city of London enables both social alienation and the concealment of violent crime.
Gender and Domestic Power
Mrs. Bunting is the practical manager of the household, handling the lodger and making key decisions, while Bunting is more passive, yet she is also subject to the lodger's misogyny and her own internalized fears, showing the complex dynamics of gender within the home.
Psychology of the Criminal
The lodger, Mr. Sleuth, is portrayed as a religious fanatic who reads the Bible and Cruden's Concordance, uses red ink, and performs 'experiments,' suggesting a disturbed mind that rationalizes murder as divine vengeance, exploring the intersection of madness, religion, and vi…
