**First appearance:** 0084-melissus

## Snapshot

The Samian admiral who defended Eleatic monism with military discipline and died refusing to surrender to a tyrant.

## Who they are

Melissus of Samos was a statesman and naval commander who brought the Eleatic philosophy of Parmenides and Zeno into the political arena. He argued that the universe is one, unchanging, and infinite, and that motion and plurality are illusions — a doctrine he defended with the same rigor he brought to defending his city. His death, refusing to betray his friends under torture, made him a model of philosophical courage in the ancient world.
