# Peter Pan — The Little White Bird character guide > Peter Pan in The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Peter, Poor little Peter Pan, XIV Peter Pan **First appearance:** 0013-xiv-peter-pan ## Snapshot A naked, bird-taught boy who lives on the island in the Serpentine, too happy to grow up and too human to stay a bird. ## Who they are Peter Pan is the boy Solomon Caw keeps among the birds, learning their ways, building their nests, and treating every small task as a thing of vast importance. He is good-natured enough to give away his nightgown for nest-lining, yet shrewd enough to recognize Shelley's banknote as a means of reaching the Gardens. His longing for a mother and his fear of being barred out make him the story's tenderest and most unsettling figure. ## Relationships ### [Maimie Mannering](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/maimie_mannering) _romantic_ Maimie develops a deep romantic attachment to Peter Pan, who is both fascinated and bewildered by her affection. ### [Solomon Caw](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/solomon_caw) _professional_ Solomon Caw is a wise old crow who advises and guides Peter Pan in the ways of the birds. ### [Mary Queen of Scots](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/mary_queen_of_scots) _social_ Mary Queen of Scots appears as a spectral figure in Peter Pan's world, sharing a distant, curious acquaintance. ### [Tony](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/tony) _friendship_ Peter Pan interacts with Tony as a playful and sometimes mischievous companion. ### [David](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/david) _friendship_ David and Peter Pan share a friendship built on wonder and shared adventures in Kensington Gardens. ### [Maimie Mannering](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/maimie_mannering) _romantic_ Maimie develops a deep romantic attachment to Peter Pan, who is both fascinated and bewildered by her affection. ### [Maimie Mannering](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/maimie_mannering) _romantic_ Maimie develops a deep romantic attachment to Peter Pan, who is both fascinated and bewildered by her affection. ### [Solomon Caw](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/solomon_caw) _professional_ Solomon Caw is a wise old crow who advises and guides Peter Pan in the ways of the birds. ### [Tony](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/tony) _friendship_ Peter Pan interacts with Tony as a playful and sometimes mischievous companion. ## In the story ### [III: Her Marriage, Her Clothes, Her Appetite, and an Inventory of Her Furniture](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/iii-her-marriage-her-clothes-her-appetite-and-an-inventory-of-her-furniture) Not directly present; the chapter focuses on Mary's domestic life rather than Peter Pan. ### [XIV: Peter Pan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xiv-peter-pan) The central figure of the chapter; escapes from his human life as a baby, flies to the Kensington Gardens, is shunned by fairies and birds, and is eventually adopted by the birds on the island in the Serpentine, where he learns bird ways and plays a pipe. ### [XV: The Thrush’s Nest](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xv-the-thrush-s-nest) Arrives in the Gardens via the Thrush's Nest, plays childlike games with mistaken understanding, and uses Shelley's banknote to gain Solomon's help. ### [Lockout Time](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xvi-lockout-time) Central figure; torn between returning to his mother and staying in the Gardens; plays a lullaby on his pipe; ultimately flies back but finds the window barred. ### [XVII: The Little House](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xvii-the-little-house) Appears at the end of the chapter as a beautiful little naked boy who comforts Maimie after the house disappears. ### [Peter's Goat](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xviii-peter-s-goat) Learns about kisses and bravery from Maimie, proposes marriage, and later receives a goat from the fairies which he rides nightly. ### [Joey](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/chapters/xxii-joey) Not directly present; referenced indirectly through the narrator's storytelling context. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters/peter_pan - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_little_white_bird_se/characters
