Concepts
Ideas that structure The Little Nugget by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Kidnapping and Custody
The central plot revolves around the repeated attempts to kidnap Ogden Ford, the 'Little Nugget,' driven by a bitter custody battle between his divorced parents and the machinations of professional criminals.
Love and Selfishness
The protagonist Peter Burns navigates conflicting romantic feelings for Cynthia and Audrey, with his initial complacent egoism challenged by the realization that love requires genuine selflessness and sacrifice.
Wealth and Corruption
Elmer Ford's immense wealth corrupts his family, turning his son Ogden into a spoiled, cynical child and attracting a host of unscrupulous characters who view the boy as a commodity.
Class and Snobbery
The book satirizes the British class system through characters like Mr. Abney, who fawns over aristocratic pupils, and Mrs. Drassilis, whose social climbing and greed drive much of the conflict.
Deception and Identity
Multiple characters assume false identities—Peter poses as a teacher, Sam Fisher as a butler, and others as kidnappers—highlighting the theme of performance and hidden motives in society.
Parenthood and Neglect
Ogden's parents are portrayed as deeply flawed: his mother is desperate but powerless, his father is cold and materialistic, and both fail to provide genuine care, leaving the boy emotionally stunted.
Adventure and Chaos
The narrative is driven by a series of chaotic, often comedic adventures—escapes, sieges, and double-crosses—that disrupt the orderly world of the preparatory school and upend the characters' lives.
