As a supporting figure in The Little Demon, Aleksandr Veriga is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Marshal of the Nobility; receives Peredonov in his study, discusses schools and rumors, offers a formal but non-committal response.
Veriga belongs to the district's minor gentry, moving among officials and teachers with the ease of inherited standing. His relative cultivation and composure set him apart from the petty functionaries around him, though he is not immune to the town's intrigues. He matters because he represents an alternative to Peredonov's squalid world, a reminder of what provincial life might be if it were not so thoroughly poisoned by malice and boredom.
