**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Catherine, Mademoiselle de Vaucelles

## Snapshot

The Rue Saint Jacques calls her a fool for choosing a penniless poet over noble suitors, but Catherine de Vaucelles knows precisely what she wants.

## Who they are

Betrothed to François de Montcorbier on the Fête-Dieu, she scandalizes her neighbors by refusing Noël d'Arnaye's nobility, Philippe Sermaise's money, and every safer match in Paris. Her choice sets jealousies burning: a priest gnaws his lip, a handsome ass drinks himself senseless, and a rival woman weeps and sends for allies. Catherine's stubborn preference for love over advantage drives the episode's early collisions and makes her the still center of a gathering storm.
