## Who they are

She is the sister of Hugh Vernon, the man charged with keeping Fulke d'Arnaye caged, and she moves through her garden to the sound of a voice trilling her name in borrowed ancient praises. Surprised by the Frenchman's sudden appearance, she parries his elaborate complaint of love with laughter and skepticism, unimpressed by his catalogue of Scythian and Greek remedies. Her amused composure against his desperate wit makes her the pivot on which the captive's seven-year patience turns.
