# Waddell — The Life of Buffalo Bill character guide

> Waddell in The Life of Buffalo Bill by William F. Cody.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0007-v-in-business

## Snapshot

A partner in the great freighting firm of Majors & Russell, whose ox-trains and overland routes open the West that young Cody will spend his life crossing.

## Who they are

Waddell belongs to the commercial empire of Majors & Russell, the freighters whose wagon trains haul goods across the plains and whose operations give boys like Cody their first paid work in the saddle. He represents the business muscle behind westward expansion, the men who profit from the same routes the army patrols and the Indians resist. His firm's trains are the moving world Cody grows up in, and his name anchors the narrative in the real economy of bull-whacking and overland freighting.
