> Mr. Wilcox in The Life of Buffalo Bill by William F. Cody.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** a Mr. Wilcox

**First appearance:** 0010-viii-adventures-on-the-overland-road

## Snapshot

A frontier trader whose dealings with young Cody mark the ordinary commerce that threaded the dangerous plains long before fame found the scout.

## Who they are

Wilcox belongs to the cast of plainsmen, freighters, and traders who populate Cody's early years, men whose livelihoods depended on moving goods across country that could kill them without warning. His exchanges with Cody place the future scout inside a working network of bull-trains and overland routes rather than the battlefield. Such figures matter because they show the everyday economy Cody was raised in, grounding his later exploits in a life of real labor and risk.
