# Earl of Dunraven — The Life of Buffalo Bill character guide

> Earl of Dunraven in The Life of Buffalo Bill by William F. Cody.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Earl, The Earl

**First appearance:** 0027-xxv-hunting-with-a-grand-duke

## Snapshot

An English nobleman who crosses the Atlantic to hunt big game on the plains, his aristocratic curiosity throwing Cody's hard-won expertise into sharp relief.

## Who they are

The Earl arrives from a world of titles and leisure to pursue sport in country where Cody's knowledge means the difference between a trophy and an empty saddle. His presence creates a striking contrast: Old World rank meeting New World survival, with Cody as the guide who must deliver results for a man whose rank means nothing to a buffalo. He matters to the narrative because he shows how far Cody's reputation had traveled, drawing even foreign nobility to the frontier and confirming the scout's standing as the plainsman others sought out.
