As a supporting figure in The Life of Buffalo Bill, Dave Harrington is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Cody's trapping partner; sets Cody's broken leg, goes for help, returns after a snowstorm, and later dies of lung fever at Cody's home.
Harrington belongs to the fraternity of scouts, trappers, and guides Cody repeatedly names as companions in his campaigns, men whose shared dangers forge a bond the memoir treats with plain affection. His presence underscores a quiet tension in Cody's account: the West is a place of individual reputation, yet no scout survives it alone. He matters because he is part of the human texture of the early-middle arc, the comrade whose shared rides and narrow escapes make Cody's adventures feel lived rather than merely told.
