# Captain Ezekiel — The Life of Buffalo Bill character guide

> Captain Ezekiel in The Life of Buffalo Bill by William F. Cody.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ezekiel

**First appearance:** 0020-xviii-scouting

## Snapshot

A frontier post commander whose authority over soldiers and scouts makes him one of the military gatekeepers Cody must win over with competence rather than rank.

## Who they are

Captain Ezekiel stands among the officers who run the scattered forts and columns of the Western frontier, the men whose orders decide where scouts ride and what dangers they face. He embodies the army's dependence on civilian plainsmen like Cody, whose knowledge of trails and Indians outruns any West Point training. His presence in the narrative signals the world Cody enters after the Civil War, where a scout's reputation is built on service to officers who command but cannot read the land.
