# Petite Maman — The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel character guide

> Petite Maman in The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Maman, maman

**First appearance:** 0001-i

## Snapshot

A tender presence in a starving household, whose love for her family makes her the lever by which a traitor tries to pry open the Pimpernel's hiding place.

## Who they are

In a derelict Rue Berthier house, Petite Maman anchors a family of beggars — a blind father, two boys, and a daughter worn thin by hunger. Her devotion is precisely what the handsome, false 'Milor' exploits, kneeling in the dust to promise plenty in exchange for a denunciation. She embodies the human cost of the League's rescues: the poor whose loyalty is tested by want, and whose choice can betray or shelter the hunted.
