# Paul Molé — The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel character guide

> Paul Molé in The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Molé, the false Paul Molé, the real Paul Molé

**First appearance:** 0001-i

## Snapshot

A hapless Parisian whose name becomes the mask the Scarlet Pimpernel wears, and whose identity is the prize in a deadly bureaucratic gamble.

## Who they are

Molé exists chiefly as a name on a warrant — the innocent citizen whose identity the Pimpernel has borrowed to slip past the Committee of Public Safety. When Chauvelin 'detects' the spy beneath the disguise, the real Molé becomes a pawn in a contest between a sensational public trial and a quiet, masked execution. His unseen fate measures how cheaply revolutionary justice trades a man's life for a propaganda victory.
