# Lucile Clamette — The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel character guide

> Lucile Clamette in The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lucile, Clamette, poor Lucile

**First appearance:** 0001-i

## Snapshot

A terrified young woman dragged before revolutionary interrogators, clutching her younger siblings and desperate to keep her family's secrets from men who trade in fear.

## Who they are

Lucile is caught between the Committee's interrogators and the hidden Royalist fugitives she is bound to protect, and every question put to her is a trap. She gathers the little ones around her skirts like a mother hen even as she feels like a bird in a fowler's net, and her brother Etienne's contempt for what he calls her treachery cuts deeper than the threats. Her ordeal in the interrogation room sets the moral stakes of the book: what loyalty costs when the guillotine is the alternative.
