# Citizen Lebel — The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel character guide

> Citizen Lebel in The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lebel

**First appearance:** 0001-i

## Snapshot

A minor revolutionary functionary whose small certainties about passports and prisoners feed the machinery that nearly swallows the Pimpernel whole.

## Who they are

Lebel belongs to the gray bureaucracy of the Terror — the clerks and commissaries whose signatures and suspicions decide who leaves Paris and who does not. His confidence in his own identification of the prisoner collides with the doubts creeping through the Abbaye's guardroom, where even Hébert admits his mind is in a whirl. He matters because the plot turns on such men: not villains of genius, but officials whose routine vigilance is the League's most dangerous obstacle.
