  2. Chapter 2

    I

During a violent storm, Citizen Tournefort, an agent of the Committee of Public Safety, takes shelter in a Parisian house and overhears a conversation between a woman addressed as 'Madame la Comtesse' and a man named Bertin about hidden diamonds and a château at Gentilly. He attempts to apprehend them but finds only the old concierge Grosjean, who claims no one else was there. Tournefort searches the lodge and discovers a disused door left open, suggesting the aristos escaped through a back passage.

  3. Chapter 3

    II

Citizen Tournefort reports his failure to catch aristos to Citizen Gourdon, who decides to conduct an unauthorized raid on the Château de Gentilly to find the Sucy diamonds. They recruit a gang of ruffians and ransack the château, but find nothing. Citizen Chauvelin arrives, learns that one of the men, Rateau, has disappeared with a heavy bundle, and orders a pursuit to prevent the loss of the diamonds.

  4. Chapter 4

    III

Chauvelin, Gourdon, and Tournefort pursue the thief Rateau along the road from Gentilly to Paris. Chauvelin devises a plan to allow Rateau to enter the city unmolested so that he can be shadowed to the hiding place of the Comtesse de Sucy and Bertin.

  5. Chapter 5

    IV

Tournefort, Chauvelin, and Gourdon pursue Rateau through the streets of Paris, attempting to track him without being detected. Rateau eludes them with cunning maneuvers, but eventually the agents corner him near the Rue Bordet. The chapter also depicts Rateau's passage through the gate of Gentilly, where he is allowed through with minimal inspection, and the subsequent chase through the Faubourg.
