## Snapshot

An old woman from the back of beyond whose name surfaces in the case, she meets Labar's questions with a laugh that holds no merriment.

## Who they are

Sophie Lengholm belongs to the shadowy earlier history of the Gertstein affair, a figure Labar must look up before he can even place her. Bred to an ingrained distrust and contempt of all police officers, she parries his offer of friendship with wary, joyless laughter, sensing a trap where he claims only to want to let her down lightly. Her guarded knowledge of what Larry once tried to do makes her a quiet hinge in the investigation's middle stretch.
