I: Eight O’Clock in the Morning
The chapter opens at Layton Court on a summer morning, introducing the gardener William and his melancholy deliberation over greenfly. Roger Sheringham, a dynamic and observant author, teases William before encountering his friend Alexander Grierson, who is up unusually early. Roger playfully deduces that Alec is newly engaged, and Alec admits to posting a letter to his bookmaker. Their banter is interrupted when Barbara Shannon appears, her face grave and bearing bad news.

II: An Interrupted Breakfast
The chapter introduces Mr. Victor Stanworth, the genial host of the house party at Layton Court, detailing his background, character, and social connections. Roger Sheringham observes Major Jefferson's suspicious behavior, including his eagerness to move the body and his attempt to search the dead man's pockets. Roger also catches Mrs. Plant tampering with the safe. The chapter deepens the mystery surrounding the apparent suicide.
