# Gregory Ballam — The Law of the Four Just Men character guide

> Gregory Ballam in The Law of the Four Just Men by Edgar Wallace.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ballam, Mr. Ballam, Mr. Gregory Ballam

**First appearance:** 0003-the-man-with-the-canine-teeth

## Snapshot

A man of means whose movements and motives draw the quiet attention of the Four, though the courtroom never learns his part in the affair.

## Who they are

Ballam belongs to the respectable surface of the story—the world of investments, reputations, and men who are never called to account. His actions ripple outward into the trial of Jeffrey Storr without his ever being named as a defendant, which is exactly the kind of asymmetry the Four Just Men were formed to correct. Whether he is a victim, a beneficiary, or something worse, his presence in the early arc keeps the reader asking who the real criminals are and why the law keeps missing them.
