# Hawkeye — The Last of the Mohicans character guide > Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper. **Role:** major **Also known as:** La Longue Carabine, Killdeer, The Long Rifle **First appearance:** 0001-the-last-of-the-mohicans ## Snapshot A white scout raised among the Delaware, whose long rifle, dry pragmatism, and stern frontier morality make him the wilderness's most reliable — and most unsettling — ally. ## Who they are Known to enemies as La Longue Carabine, Hawkeye fights beside Chingachgook and Uncas with a marksmanship and a code that owe more to the forest than to any army. He can spare a dying enemy a bullet or refuse him one, and he argues his killings with a Calvinist plainness that shocks Heyward. His judgment and his rifle repeatedly decide who lives through the novel's early ambushes and sieges. ## Relationships ### [Uncas](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/characters/uncas) _friendship_ Hawkeye and Uncas are close companions and fellow hunters, with Hawkeye acting as a mentor to the young Mohican. ### [David Gamut](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/characters/david_gamut) _friendship_ David Gamut and Hawkeye become traveling companions, with Hawkeye tolerating David's eccentricities while protecting him. ### [Uncas](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/characters/uncas) _friendship_ Hawkeye and Uncas are close companions and fellow hunters, with Hawkeye acting as a mentor to the young Mohican. ### [Uncas](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/characters/uncas) _friendship_ Hawkeye and Uncas are close companions and fellow hunters, with Hawkeye acting as a mentor to the young Mohican. ### [David Gamut](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/characters/david_gamut) _friendship_ David Gamut and Hawkeye become traveling companions, with Hawkeye tolerating David's eccentricities while protecting him. ## In the story ### [The Last of the Mohicans](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/the-last-of-the-mohicans) Scout and woodsman who exposes Magua's treachery and offers to guide the party to safety. ### [Chapter III](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/iii) Engages in a philosophical debate with Chingachgook about the history of their peoples, demonstrates his marksmanship, and prepares to meet the approaching white men. ### [IV](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/iv) The scout who confronts the party, expresses distrust of Hurons, and agrees to guide them after learning Heyward's identity. ### [V](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/v) Leads the group, insists on secrecy, orders the killing of the foal, and navigates the canoe through the river. ### [VI](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/vi) Guides the party in the cavern, explains the geography of the falls, and engages David Gamut in conversation about his calling. ### [VII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/vii) Commands the defense, tends to David, and interprets the events with his frontier wisdom. ### [VIII](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/viii) Leads the defense, displays stoic resolve and tactical skill, refuses to waste powder on the dying Huron. ### [Chapter X](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/the_last_of_the_mohicans_se/chapters/x) Mentioned as having escaped by swimming down the river;
