## Who they are

Raised as a shepherd's son and lifted into noble circles by Adrian's friendship, he moves between intimate domestic life and the great political dramas of his age. His loyalty to Raymond and Adrian pulls him toward scenes of power he can witness but never quite command, and his own disappointments breed a restlessness he rarely confesses. Through his eyes the early world of the novel feels both vast and painfully personal, which makes the later losses land with terrible weight.
