**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Miss Anne Prettyman, Anne, the elder Miss Prettyman

**First appearance:** 0006-vii-miss-prettyman-s-private-room

## Snapshot

The elder Miss Prettyman, who runs a Silverbridge school and employs Grace Crawley, offering her a refuge she cannot bear to keep.

## Who they are

Miss Anne Prettyman governs her school with the same confidence she brings to correcting her sister's grasp of criminal law, certain that a committed man is not a convicted one. She tries to console Grace with careful truths, but the girl's grief and the servants' gossip outrun her efforts, and she must watch her pupil slip away to a home shadowed by shame and poverty. Her helpless kindness toward Grace makes the Crawley scandal feel intimate rather than abstract, a blow struck at a young woman's daily life.
