In her mother's Porchester Terrace drawing-room, Madalina stages scenes of mystery and heartbreak, treating romance as a game she intends to win. Johnny Eames knows he is only amusing himself with her, yet her letters and her poses keep drawing him back. Her manufactured crises shadow the real ones unfolding elsewhere, and her grip on Johnny's attention complicates the loyalties he owes to Lily Dale and to the Crawleys.
