## Snapshot

A softhearted, strong-willed noblewoman who takes Johnny Eames under her wing and cannot resist arranging the marriages of young people she has decided to approve.

## Who they are

Lady Julia De Guest belongs to the older generation of Barsetshire gentry, a woman accustomed to having her way in family matters and genuinely generous in the causes she adopts. She classifies young women into sheep and goats with absolute confidence, and once she has decided someone is a sheep, her favour is not withdrawn. Her protective interest in Johnny Eames and her eagerness to manage other people's romances make her a persistent, well-meaning force in the novel's social manoeuvring.
