# Seyavi — The Land of Little Rain character guide

> Seyavi in The Land of Little Rain by Mary Austin.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** old Seyavi

**First appearance:** 0011-the-basket-maker

## Snapshot

An old Paiute basket maker whose golden russet bowls, woven from willows cut when the weather's soul entered the wood, are wonders of technical precision and humanness.

## Who they are

She cuts willows twice a year by a creek that never quite reaches the river, and her baskets carry a touch beyond cleverness because the weaver and the warp lived next to the earth and were saturated with the same elements. She once danced wreathed in white clematis, singing that her heart trembled like the twining flower, and though she fed her son meadowlarks' tongues to make him quick of speech, in later years she is loath to admit it. She matters because her craft and reticence embody a whole way of counting time and making art that the book mourns even as it records.
