Concepts
Ideas that structure The Lady of the Barge by W. W. Jacobs — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Greed and Its Consequences
The pursuit of wealth and material gain leads to moral decay, betrayal, and tragedy, as seen in stories like 'The Monkey's Paw,' where a wish for money results in a son's death, and in the tale of the sailor who hides money in a mattress, leading to conflict and deceit.
Fate and Superstition
Characters grapple with supernatural forces and the idea that fate is inescapable, as in 'The Monkey's Paw,' where a cursed talisman grants wishes with horrific outcomes, and in the story of the 'something' in the marshes, which inspires fear and dread.
Class and Social Mobility
The book explores rigid social hierarchies and the desire to rise above one's station, as seen in the barge skipper's discomfort with a female passenger, the carpenter's envy of his sister-in-law's inheritance, and the pretensions of the doctor and solicitor forced into menial…
Deception and Betrayal
Characters frequently deceive one another for personal gain, as in the blackmail plot involving letters in 'The Well,' the sailor who hides money from his shipmates, and the innkeeper's past crimes catching up with him through an old shipmate.
Marriage and Romantic Relationships
Romantic entanglements are often fraught with jealousy, manipulation, and social pressure, as seen in the mate's jealousy over the skipper's attention to Miss Harris, the courtship of the heiress Mrs. Pullen, and the tense engagement between Jem Benson and Olive.
Crime and Moral Ambiguity
The narrative delves into criminal acts and the blurred line between right and wrong, such as the murder of Fletcher with a Japanese sword, the blackmail scheme in 'The Well,' and the theft and concealment of a dead man's money on a ship.
Isolation and Community
Characters often experience physical or social isolation, from the lonely barge on the river to the remote country inn, while community bonds are tested by fear, as in the tiger scare that traps villagers in a pub, or by greed, as when the carpenter's friends flock to him for…
The Past and Its Ghosts
The past relentlessly haunts characters, whether through the return of an old shipmate seeking blackmail, the guilt of a murder, or the supernatural consequences of a wish, emphasizing that one cannot escape history.
